in melbourne in summer when it gets really hot, the cicadas will start up and make a deafening sound.you can walk past one but never locate them even when they makes this noise so i had no idea what they look like and how big they are.this afternoon i got a call from my friends saying that a cicada had just broken out of its shell and was waiting on their house for the evening, so i dropped by to have a look… THESE THINGS ARE BIG !! and weird looking too !!
around 15 cm including wings, very wide and they have 3 extra simple eyes (ocelli). this fella, the australian green grocer cicada is one of the loudest (120 dB ) insects in the world i just read on wikipedia which also has another photo of this one taken by trudy more photos here |
